For a few years now, I’ve been researching and talking to field experts about disaster risk, particularly its financing mechanisms. My research work analyzed the profile of Nairobi City County’s disaster risk policy to suggest whether it should consider an urban parametric insurance scheme that could enhance its climate risk management (CRM) plan.  

This adds on to a solid background in insurance and risk management, and work with development and humanitarian organizations in several countries and with different cultures. Most recently, I've been convening and mobilizing agencies towards a speedier recovery of Hurricane Harvey-hit communities in the Texas Gulf Coast. In the process, I've spearheaded the use of GIS applictions to manage and better communicate data for strategic decision-making of recovery actors.

 

Personal experience with floodings, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami warnings and wildfires in the US, Ecuador and Thailand has also shaped my culturally sensitive perspective of disaster risk management and complemented my understanding of the complexities of the politics of disasters in diverse communities.
